Christmas Door Ornament
I was going to make a wreath, but this is way better.
^_^
I cut it out of cardboard.
The shiny bits are aluminum foil.
Hand painted the rest.
Add and bow and some wire.
There you go.
Countdown till Halloween
I'm in the process of making this at the moment, but have some pretty pictures to share.
^_^
Laid out the pattern's and numbered them
(so, I wouldn't forget)
Yay!! Halloween colors!!! Love, love, love.
These aren't completely done, but you get the idea.
Hopefully these will be finished tomorrow.
(:
Front Door Monogram.. of sorts.
So I wanted to make something to make our front door festive, but since it's not Halloween time yet I want to stay clear from the theme.
(Just means I get make another fancy door decoration for Halloween, Lol.)
So this is what I came up with:
I don't have pictures of each step, but I can always explain it to you! I'm sorry it's so long. Next time I will make sure to take pictures so you won't have to read so much.
Supplies
The Letter:
- Corrugated Cardboard
- Fabric to cover letter
- Fiberfill or scrap fabric pieces (Mine is a little of both)
- Sewing Machine would be fantastic or just hand sew it
- 16g Wire
- Buttons
- Scissors
- Marker
The Paper Feathers:
- Book pages
- Tea bags (for staining)
- 16g Wire
- Elmer's Glue
The Star:
- Cereal box
- Paint
- Ribbon/Thread= pretty bow
- Ruler
- Marker
- Something to score with (Backside of a butter knife would work)
Directions
The letter
The letter
Start off by drawing and cutting out the letter of your choice.
The cutting may get kinda tricky, but it doesn't have to be completely beautiful since it is going to be covered in fabric anyway.
Lay your fabric out.
Fold it in half so that wrong sides are facing.
Now lay your letter on top of it.
You will want to leave about an inch for seam allowance and stuffing volume.
Go ahead and cut that trick out!
The sewing and stuffing is the hardest part of this, let me just go ahead and tell ya.
Since mine is a C it is probably a lot easier than other letters.
Anyway...
Put your cardboard piece in the middle of you fabric.
Pin around the letter.
There will be extra fabric! Don't pin right beside the letter, you need some stuffing room.
Go ahead and sew it up... BUT....
Leave a space in the seam on the top and bottom of the letter, you need to make sure you leave spaces for stuffing.
(Trust me, it is REAL difficult to fill it from only one hole.)
If you are using a machine, remember not to bend your cardboard. You may have to stop and start again from another angle, which is a bit time consuming, but better than hand-stitching it all.
Once stitched, go ahead and start stuffing it up!!
I used a big paintbrush to help push the stuffing in and around the letter.
The go to the other end and do the same thing.
Once you have your desired 'fluffage' stitch the holes closed.
I cut about a three inch piece of 16g wire.
Poke it through the fabric at the top of letter.
(You're making the hanging device.)
Poke it on through again about 1/2in from the other hole.
Make a loop, twist and pull until you have something you like, and will successfully hold/hang your letter.
---------------------------------------
The Star
You really need a uniform star to make the 3D effect work right, and should be sized according to your letter.
(Mine was lots of trial and error. You could always print off a star to use as a template for your cereal box.)
Once you get it all cut out you will start scoring it.
Use your ruler, one point will line up straight to another point on the star.
Use the back of a butter knife or whatever you are using, to make a deep crevice.
Don't cut all the way through though!!
Once you get one line scored flip it over and bend it on the line you just made.
You will want the side that the made the scores on to be on the inside.
Repeat till all points of the star are connected to a smaller point.
Now bend the fuck out of it till you get an awesome 3D nautical star.
Purdy right? I was proud. (: I also pinned on some buttons to see if I wanted them or not.
Then paint it whatever color you want! Remember every other one is the same color.
Once the paint dries glue your bow onto the middle point of the star.
-------------------------------------------
For the feathers.
I didn't follow this tutorial exactly, but this is where I got the idea:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, I did mine total free-form. I laid the star down and made sizes that wouldn't overtake everything.
Start by ripping some pages out of a book.
(Not a good book mind you! Use some trash-worthy information nonsense stuff)
You will need 2 sides for every feather.
Lay out the pages and tap/smear/dribble the tea bags all over it!
Let it dry some and go back and do it again.
Now let it dry SOMEWHAT! You don't want it completely dry just yet.
Go ahead and cut out your feather shape.. really it looks like a leaf at first.
Cut a piece of wire that is long enough to go almost all the way to the top of your feather and leave few inches on the end so you stab them into the fabric.
Take elmer's glue and spread it on one side of your feather.
You don't want it to thick though, just enough to hold.
Lay your wire down in the middle and top with the matching feather piece.
Give it a good smush while it is chillin' on the table, then pick it up by the wire and smush it between your fingers so you get all the air out and glue spread.
Now is cuttin' time!
Make cuts varying in length, you can cut all the way to the wire.
You want to go in a 'C' pattern so that you don't end up cutting any pieces off.
Once you finish all that, ruffle them up!!
Spread the cuts apart to give a realistic feather shape.
No let that bitch dry over night!
I know that sucks, waiting and all, but it is way easier if you just wait.
Once dry, stab them in the fabric/stuffing/cardboard.
I added a little drop of glue on the fabric before sticking it that way the feathers will have a little something extra to hold on to.
To hang the star glue a piece of foam the same depth as the star into the middle. Then stick a needle into the foam and the into the letter.
For the buttons you could either just glue them on or hand-stitch them on.
I did a bit of both, guess I got impatient, lol.
That's it! Hang that joker up and be proud!!
Close up of the action!
------------------------------------------------------------------
Finished project.
